Degas, Edgar (1834-1917)

Toilet of a Woman

France, 1884

This composition differs from other works on the theme by Degas in the specific character of the setting, with the striped floral-patterned wallpaper that was in vogue in the 1880s clearly in evidence. The use of stumping to soften the pastel lines creates an impression of damp, even unsteady air. The young woman is rubbing herself to get warm, as is suggested by the band of blue colour. The cold hue is contrasted to the warm surface of the wall of the room, with a ray of morning sunlight slipping across it.
This work, along with others depicting female nudes bathing, drying themselves or combing their hair, was shown at the last Impressionist exhibition in 1886.
