This is one of the most accomplished sketches for the 1858-59 painting The Death and a Woodcutter ( Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek, Copenhagen). This subject inspired by Jean de La Fontaine's similarly entitled fable was particularly close to the artist's attitude towards life. It is known that both the painting and this sketch (1858) were in the collection of their first owner Laurent-Richard Jacobsen. In 1913 the sketch was purchased at an auction by a Russian collector (probably V. N. Argutinsky-Dolgorukov, from whose collection it was acquired by the Hermitage Museum in 1920).
