Portrait of Count Nikolai Zubov

Russia, 1853

Count Nikolai Dmitriyevich Zubov (1801–1871) served in the Life-Guards Preobrazhensky regiment, retiring in the rank of captain in 1832. He was a court official, rising to the rank of hofmeister (steward of the household) in 1859. Nikolai was the son of Major General Count Dmitry Alexandrovich Zubov (1764–1836) and Princess Praskovya Alexandrovna, née Viazemskaya (1772–1835). In 1827 he married Countess Alexandra Gavrilovna de Raymond-Modène (1807–1839), who bore him five children. Evidently it was the early death of his wife, who passed away soon after the birth of their youngest daughter, that inspired Zubov to devote his life to charity work.
