This trompe-l’oeil picture takes the form of a little genre scene: a Russian peasant wearing a short sheepskin coat and fur hat sitting on a bench. He is weaving strips of bast (fibre from the bark of trees) into a new shoe, while a finished pair hangs from his belt.
