Pillement, Jean Baptiste. 1728-1808

Mountain Landscape

France, 1765

Pillement was one of the artists who most often worked abroad. In the 1740s and early 1750s he lived in Madrid and Lisbon, and in 1754–1762 he resided in England. Finally in the autumn of 1764 the artist Marcello Bacciarelli recommended him to King Stanislaw August who needed an interior designer for decorating some of the rooms in the Royal Castle in Warsaw. Pillement’s candidacy was approved and so from the end of the winter of 1765 till the summer of 1767 he worked in Poland. Besides his primary activity of decorating the castle in Warsaw, he panted architectural settings in imitation of Italian taste exclusively to please the King and his retinue. The four surviving oval landscapes out of the seven original ones (1765; 87×134) decorate the Green Hall of the Royal Castle which was reconstructed after the war. The two other landscapes (1765; 149×135) are exhibited in the National Museum in Warsaw. The documents mentioned another pair of landscapes titled ‘Cascade’ and ‘Mountain with an Abyss’ by Pillement dated 1765. The exact location and the sizes of these paintings are unknown. It is not improbable that the ‘Mountainous Landscape’ from the Hermitage can be identified with the second one. One can state with certainty that the Hermitage painting comes from the Stanislaw August collection, however, it is no quite unclear in which of the royal residences it was housed. The stretcher has a surviving label with an inscription ‘B. Kor. Zamok’, besides near it one can see an inscription in ink ‘Loz. Dv.’ On the strength of this it can be assumed that the ‘Mountainous Landscape’ had changed its location in Warsaw before, at the beginning of World War I, it was evacuated from the Polish capital.
