Rural Feast (October)

Germany, late 15th - first third of the 16th century

This is one of twelve allegorical compositions by Wertinger depicting the different months of the year, in this case October (the other 11 paintings are scattered through various European collections). Such subjects allowed the artist to paint genre scenes or landscapes with figures. Here the hilly Bavarian landscape with its fast-flowing river serves as a background for peasants feasting, dancing and fighting as they mark the end of the summer drudgery and the bringing in of the harvest. Behind them is a procession with banners heading for the gaily decorated church. The light and bright colouring emphasizes the joyous mood. Such works were the direct forerunners on the road to the genre scenes of the 17th century. It is possible that the painting as a decoration of an interior.
