Cook at the Table with Game

Flanders, circf 1640-1645

Jordaens painted the figure of the cook laughingly presenting to the viewer a hare that he has selected from the stock of game to prepare for the table. The man’s appearance is reminiscent of the images of jesters that the artist produced in the 1640s and ’50s (see Cleopatra’s Feast), which have their origins in mock-ancient masks of satyrs. The large arrangement of dead game on the table was the work of Pauwel de Vos, a specialist in still lifes and hunting scenes. His signature was discovered on the painting in the course of the restoration carried out in 2015, when the canvas was removed from a roll on which it had been stored for many years.
