"Portrait of Glafira Zimina, a Girl from a Merchant Family"

Russia, first half of the 19th century

Museum documents have preserved the name of the girl depicted here: Glafira Zimina. The unknown artist’s task was more than just to produce a superficial likeness of this specific model. The rose sprig is an element that plays an important part in the portrait. The gesture of the pointing finger indicates that it has only just been plucked from the bush. The two buds that have not yet opened and one fully open bloom speaks of the start of the subject’s conscious life and probably points to her age.
