Portrait of an Unknown Woman

Russia, Circa 1817-1819

It has so far not been possible to establish who is depicted in this portrait. On the basis of the costume, Yulia Plotnikova has dated the work to 1818–19. Proceeding from that and Warneck’s own records listing the portraits that he made in 1819, it is possible to suggest a few candidates. Paintings of the wife of Mikhail Titov, the head of Moscow city duma, of the wife of Senator Milashevich and of Praskovya Mikhailovna Nilova, the wife of the Governor of Tambov, a “portrait of Filosofova” and a “portrait of Yakovleva” (all painted in 1819) cannot as yet be matched (or not) with the Hermitage picture due to the lack of sufficient pictorial or even written sources.
