Portrait of the Artist Ivan Sokolov

Russia, 1849

Ivan Ivanovich Sokolov (1823–1918) was a genre painter and portraitist, a member of the Academy of Arts from 1857 and a professor from 1860. Yakov Kapkov is not a name that specialists mention frequently, but his portrait of Sokolov in the Hermitage collection is evidence not only of his great ability as a painter, but also of the special place Kapkov occupied in the artistic life of the 1840s and ’50s. The portrait was executed with emphatic care and “naturalness”. There is no showy artistry in it. Sokolov is depicted in a moment of creative inspiration that expresses itself in the slight forward lean, the gaze directed into the distance and the gesture of the hand, clutching at the lapel of the jacket.
