The Entombment

Italy, Circa 1520

Garofalo was so strongly influenced by the work of Raphael that contemporaries even nicknamed him the "Raphael of Ferrara". For many years this Entombment was considered to be a work by Raphel himself, and as such was presented to Peter the Great in 1720 by Piotr Beklemishev, Russian ambassador to Italy, who had in his turn received the painting as a gift from Cardinal Ottoboni. The expressive drawing and skilful composition are combined here with a certain dryness of manner, theatricality of pose and rather unnecessarily energetic movements by individual figures.
