Steenwyck, Hendrick van II, circa 1580-before 1649

St Jerome in his Cell

Flanders, 1634

Alongside pieces of the "A Company on a Palace Terrace" type and church interiors, Hendrik van Steenwijk the Younger also painted works on religious themes. The architecture in them is not simply a background but a true setting. The artist turned his hand more than once to the subject of St Jerome in His Cell, inspired by Albrecht Dürer's 1514 engraving of the same name. Two paintings by him on the subject are in the collections of Joseph Wrightman and the Marquis of Lothian (UK). In contrast to those, the Hermitage work is a night scene and lacks the depiction of the lion.
