Bossche (Bosch), Balthasar van den. 1681-1715

Studio of an Artist

Flanders, 1709

In creating this painting, Bossche used the device of a picture within a picture. The artist is depicted in the centre of the composition, showing a portrait of a girl in an oval frame to a client who is standing on the left and is evidently the father of the model. On the fireplace Bossche has placed one version of the sculptural group Hercules Fighting the Nemean Lion by Pierre Puget (1622-1694), which also features in the companion painting A Sculptor's Studio. The closest analogy is a painting of the same name in the National Museum in Warsaw, in which the left-hand part of the composition (the fireplace and attributes of the arts) is repeated.
