Dolci, Carlo. 1616-1687

St Cecilia

Italy, Second half of the 1640s

The Florentine artist Carlo Dolci enjoyed great fame during his life, and indeed his works are always marked by superb technique and elegance of form and colour. Saint Cecilia is one of his best late works. The patroness of musicians, Cecilia is shown seated at the harpsichord. With great care, Dolci conveys the marvellous texture of her green silk dress, the transparent greyish muslin and the shining stones of her brooch. Cecilia's face is calm and reveals no signs of exaltation or ecstasy, only the shining halo reminding us that this is not a secular painting.
