Portrait of Sculptor Thorwaldsen

Germany, 19th century

Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) was a celebrated Danish sculptor. After graduating from the Copenhagen Academy of Arts in 1797, he left for Italy, where he worked for 40 years. Contemporaries considered him one of the most outstanding masters of his day. Depicted on the left is Thorvaldsen’s statue of Hope that was created in 1817 and installed in the Humboldt family vault at Tegel (Berlin) in 1829. This portrait was made in 1823, when the painter and the sculptor, who were friends, were both living in Rome.
