Battle of Borodino on 26 August (7 September) 1812

Germany, 1843

The painting is a part of the series devoted to the great battles of the Patriotic War of 1812. This one shows a battle that took place on 26 August (7 September) 1812. On the left there are soldiers of the Lithuanian Regiment. In front of them there is the regiment's commanding officer Matvey Khrapovitsky (on a horseback); behind him there is a solid square of the Izmailovsky Regiment's 3rd Battalion. In the centre is the wounded 2nd Army Commander-in-Chief, General Piotr Bagration, surrounded by soldiers and officers. The 3rd Infantry Division Commander Piotr Konovnitsyn (on a white horse) listens to his last orders. Bagration's Chief of Staff, Adjutant General Emmanuel Saint-Priest accompanies the surgeon James Wylie. On the cart near the wounded cuirassier company officer there is Commander Mikhail Vorontsov, also wounded when defending Bagration's flanks. In the middle there are the 1st and the 2nd Izmailovsky Regiment Battalions, firing at the French cavalry. In the background on the right there is the scene of a famous counterattack on the Rayevsky Battery, in the centre of the Russian troops, carried out by the Frenchmen.
