Rialto Bridge in Venice

Italy, 1740s

Despite the shortness of his life, Michele Marieschi has gone down in the history of Italian art as a painter, engraver, architect and theatrical designer. His urban landscapes - or vedute as they were known - presented contemporary Venice, precisely depicting architectural details and the numerous minutiae of urban life whilst preserving the integrity of the overall impression. The tonal unity and light, airy style allow us to see Marieschi as a forerunner of Francesco Guardi. The Rialto Bridge with its stalls and the embankments nearby was the trading and business centre of 18th-century Venice.
