The Virgin and the Child in a Landscape

Italy, Circa 1503

By the end of the 15th century, Renaissance masters were increasingly departing from tradition in their depictions of the Virgin. Instead of placing her on a throne, surrounded by saints, they might show her in a landscape. Such works were often small, intended for domestic or private chapels. Giorgione's Virgin is lyrical in mood, Mary carefully holding the head of the Child as he falls to sleep. The warm colouring creates the sense of evening light. We look upon the scene from a high point of view, but for all the grand scale it looks welcoming and comfortable.
