Mole with the Doges' Palace

Italy, Circa 1710

Carlevaris was a painter and mathematician and is considered to have been the founder of the Venetian urban landscape, known as the veduta. He combined topographical precision with an ability to convey a sense of space. The Mole with the Doges' Palace shows the Piazzetta with the columns of St Theodore and St Mark, decorated correspondingly with a figure of the saint and St Mark's winged lion ? the two symbols of Venice. To the left is the Doges' Palace, to the right are the Mole and the gulf with boats. The pair to this work, also in the Hermitage, is Regatta on the Grand Canal in Venice.
