Apostles at the Virgin's Tomb

Italy, Circa 1582

Here we see the lower part of a ceiling painting showing The Assumption of the Virgin, commissioned by Francesco Tedaldo, Senior Guardian of the Fraternity della Giustizia in Venice, for the large hall of the Scuola di Santa Maria della Giustizia e di San Gerolamo. In 1825 part of the severely dilapidated roof collapsed and only two fragments of the ripped ceiling painting survived. Its lower, larger, part was purchased in 1862 for 25,000 francs by I.P. Balashov, who later presented it to the Hermitage. The second fragment showing Adam and Eve is now in a private collection in Milan. By the Virgin's tomb we see not only the apostles, but in the foreground the Fathers of the Church - to the right St Jerome and to the left St Augustine, above whom is the figure of Tedaldo himself.
