Portrait of Alexander Herzen

Russia, second half of the 19th century

Alexander Ivanovich Herzen (1812–1870) was a writer, thinker and commentator who founded the Free Russian Press in London in 1853. He published the almanac Pole Star (1855–69) and the newspaper The Bell (1857–67). The portrait of Herzen is an undoubted masterpiece of Russian realist painting. The artistic effect is staggering: it included not only excitement and emotionality, but also a rare typification and psychological depth to the image. It is no coincidence that people use the term “portrait-biography” in reference to works of this sort.
