Perspective View of the War Gallery of 1812 in the Winter Palace

Russia, 1829

This gallery was created in 1826 to the design of the architect Carlo Rossi in place of six small rooms between the White Hall and St George Hall in the Winter Palace. The gallery is devoted to the Russian nation’s valiant victory over Napoleon in the Patriotic War of 1812. It was formally inaugurated on 25 December 1826, the anniversary of the expulsion of the French forces from Russian territory. The English artist George Dawe, who produced more than 300 portraits for the gallery, managed to create very eloquent and memorable images of the grim heroes of the war. They all employ the devices of the Romantic portrait: the heroizing of the personages, a powerful angle of view, bright colour scheme and contrasts of lighting.
