Portrait of an Unknown Man (Self-Portrait ?)

Russia, 1840

In recent publications it has been suggested that this is a self-portrait of the artist. Alexander Kibovsky pointed to Golicke’s painting known as The Artist’s Notebook (private collection, St Petersburg) that presents variants or fragments of his works, which includes a depiction of the same personage as in the Hermitage picture, but in the uniform of the Cavalier Guards. To the left of the likeness is the artist’s signature and the date 1840, which coincides with the dating of the Hermitage work.
