Portrait of Doctor Aruntius Azzariti

Russia, First third of the 18th century

Johann Aruntius Azzariti (?–1747) was an Italian physician who entered Russian service in 1721. He was attached to the military hospital in St Petersburg and taught anatomy at the Medical-Surgical School. He performed assignments for the chancellery of medicine “in physical matters”. From 1733 to 1737 Azzariti served with Field Marshal Münnich’s army in the field. He then settled in Moscow where he had a private medical practice. In 1742 he was briefly arrested. The portrait would have been painted between 1737 and 1743, when Azzariti was living in Moscow.
