Landscape with Tobias and the Angel (Evening)

France, 1663

"Landscape with Tobias and the Angel" ("Evening") has traditionally been placed within the series of the "Four Times of the Day". It was painted for one of Lorrain?s permanent clients, Henrich van Halmale, the dean of the Antwerp cathedral. Against the background of a wonderful evening landscape, an Old Testament episode from the canonically unrecognized book of Tobit is played out. The story is about how blind Tobit sent his son Tobias to Media to bring back certain money due to him. The youth remained for night on the bank of the Tigris and decided to bathe in the river but a large fish attacked him. Then, upon the advice of his fellow traveller, the Archangel Raphael, he seized the fish, pulled it out onto land and removed its heart, liver and gall bladder. The heart and liver helped Tobias later on to liberate his bride from the evil spirit Asmodeus; and the gall bladder, when applied to the eyes of his father, returned his vision to the blind man. The sun is the emotional focus and centre of colour in the painting. In leaving the Earth, it casts its last rays on nature and its hues seem to change before our eyes: light golden rays wane and dark shadows arise, symbolizing the oncoming night chill. The colour scheme of the work is built on a harmonious balance and at the same time on contrast between the illuminated and shadowed parts of the landscape, cold and warm gradations. Horizontals predominate and these give the painting a mood of calm, slowness and strict grandeur.
