Jouvenet, Jean. 1644

Descent from the Cross

France, Between 1704 and 1709

Jouvenet was a representative of the French academic trend. As perhaps the leading painter of religious scenes in late-17th-century France, he followed Classical canons in works such as this Descent from the Cross. The saints and mourners are shown in majestic poses, wearing approximations of ancient robes, and yet this artist, known for his complex, changing attitude to Classicism - towards the end of his life he tended more towards the Baroque and introduced elements of realism - included some of his own impressions of real life. Note the figure of a simple worker with a ladder to the left of the cross, the reaelistic dead body of Christ, with its collapsed stomach and lolling head.
