Decamps, Alexandre-Gabriel. 1803-1860

Still Life

France, First half of the 19th century

The selection of objects in this Decamps?s still life is very unusual: in the centre, suspended from a hook, are a dead hare and a cockerel - a hunting trophy and a representative of poultry. The dark feathers of cockerel effectively contrast with the white background of a cloth; to the left is an empty hook, and to the right, a tin lantern hanging from another hook, while at the bottom there is just a fragment of a chair?s back. Despite the strictly balanced composition, the picture creates impression of a fragment of reality rather than an artificially created ensemble.
