Diaz de la Peña, Narcisse Virgile. 1807-1876

Turkish Family

France, 1840s

The early period of Diaz de la Pena's creative work was marked by the influence of Romanticism, which revealed itself mainly in his pictures on mythological and Oriental subjects, including this Hermitage painting. The artist paid attention to the overall painterly impression rather than realistic treatment of ethnographical features. The dark rich colouring of the painting with dense shades is enlivened with bright patches of the clothing. Despite the artist's keen observation in the rendition of ethnic types and exotic dresses, the Turkish Family is a mere improvisation on an Oriental theme.
