Still Life with Fruit

France, 1721

During the first half of the 18th century, one of the most popular painting genres was the decorative still life, of which the unsurpassed master was Jean-Baptiste Oudry. Still Life with Fruit is amongst his earliest works, and here he is seen to continue the traditions of Flemish, and in part Dutch, traditions of the second half of the 17th century, which is particularly noticeable in the composition and the placing of the objects. Similar works were often conceived as pairs, intended to complement each other as part of an interior. The light colouring and the broad painterly style with which the artist depicted the succulent peaches, the dark green pears and the basket of blue plums to the right of the toppled vase, create a very satisfying and cheering effect. Oudry paid great attention to light, scattering sparkling highlights on the fruits and the curling vegetation such as to reinforce the decorative qualities of the painting.
