Gérard, François-Pascal-Simon. 1770-1837

Portrait of Prince Viktor Kochubey

France, 1809

Prince Viktor Kochubey (1768-1834) was a Russian famous diplomat and man of state, who occupied the posts of Minister for Internal Affairs and Chairman of the State Council, being named Russian State Chancellor not long before his death. In this, one of Gerard's finest works, the artist demonstrated not only his skilful painterly manner, but also his talent for depicting both the physical characteristics of faces and the psychology of the sitter, creating a true likeness enlivened by a feeling for the subject's inner world. Gerard was able to bring out the character of Kochubey the man: his sharp heroic mind, his perceptiveness, the sense of his own importance, his restraint and caution.
