Portrait of Count Pavel Stroganov as a Child

France, 1778

This portrait of Pavel Alexandrovich Stroganov (1772-1817) was painted in Paris, during a visit to the city by the Stroganov family. One of Greuze's most genuine and sincere works, here he maganged to convey that sense of seriousness and that self-importance which the six-year-old child - heir to a vast fortune and rich art collection, scion of one of Russia's most prestigious families - presented during the sittings. With its warm colour range, this portrait of Popo, as Stroganov was known in his childhood, was very popular and many copies were made. Stroganov went on to take part in the French Revolution, to become a leading Russian diplomat and hero of the war with Napoleon in 1812.
