Voille, Jean Louis. 1744-1804

Portrait of Olga Zherebtsova

France, Second half of the 18th century

Almost the whole of Voille's life was spent in Russia, where he painted gentle, intimate portraits. This simple work, with its modest composition and use of colour, shows Olga Alexandrovna Zherebtsova (1766-1849), nee Zubova, sister of one of Catherine II's favourites, Platon Zubov. In the slender figure and the proud bearing, we see the woman's firm, decisive character. Wife of the Royal Chamberlain, Alexey Zherebtsov, she took part in the plot to remove Paul I, Catherine's son, from the throne, but she went abroad before his murder took place in 1801.
