Robert, Hubert. 1733-1808

Landscape with an Obelisk

France, 1802

Sketches of the famous landscape at Tivoli, near Rome, formed the basis for this painting, as for many of Robert's numerous romantic scenes. The obelisk rising up into the air and the tall trees straining upwards give the composition a sense of proportion and severity, enlivened by the group of women approaching the pool. These figures introduce a sense of contrast between the everyday and the eternal. The philosopher Denis Diderot complained that there were too many people in Robert's paintings, but his tastes must have been satisfied with the introduction of a melancholic female figure in the gloom of the avenue of trees, for he himself dreamed of "entering into a painting and sitting there among the columns".
