Comment:

There are several replicas of this composition known, marked by slight changes. G. Wildenstein [1924], the author of the monograph about Lancret, named three versions including the one engraved by F. Julien, while I.S. Nemilova [1985] mentioned four. The researcher considered that the painting in question had been previously kept in the King Stanislaw August collection in St.Petersburg. The painting ‘Rural Festival’ ascribed to Watteau was put up for sale at the auction of the Polish King’s property in October 1798, in St.Petersburg, and valued at 5,400 rbl. which is indicative of a larger size painting. Therefore, V.M. Belkovskaya [2012] considered that the painting in question was a Hermitage piece. However, according to V. Maksimovich [2009], the given painting, which does come from the Stanislaw August collection- confirmed by inv. № 273 relating to the Polish King’s collection - was probably purchased by N.B. Yusupov a little later, supposedly after 1821, when the remaining part of the King’s collection was sold in Warsaw.
