Portrait of Ekaterina Golovkina

France, 1757

Ekaterina Alexandrovna Golovkina (1696-1722) was the daughter of Alexander Ivanovich Shuvalov, Fieldmarshal to Peter the Great. Her portrait was painted in 1757, without any of the pomp and outer magnificence of a state portrait. The simplicity of composition and colour which emphasise the sitter's modesty allowed the artist to capture the lyrical intonation ote which best reflected the girl's own character, creating an image of sincerity, truth and purity. Tocque worked in Russia for many years and his soft painterly style was taken up and imitated by a number of local painters such as Fyodor Rokotov.
