Ovens, Jurgen. 1623-1679

Self-Portrait

Germany, Circa 1670/1675

As we can see from this self-portrait, Ovens was able to create a realistic, vivid characterization, despite other limitations. The range of brown tones, the compositional devices and type of the lighting all indicate the hand of a pupil and follower of Rembrandt. We can only rightly understand and assess the work of this German painter if we realize that he spent many years living in Holland, where he was very close to Rembrandt's pupils Ferdinand Bol and Jan Lievens, with whom he worked on the Amsterdam town hall.
