Fantin-Latour, Henri. 1836-1904

Flowers, Dish with Fruit and Carafe

France, 1865

In the work produced in 1865 Fantin-Latour shows an obvious preference for horizontal formats, which provided greater freedom in the resolution of new spatial problems helping to organize the composition of flowers, fruit, or plates. As a rule, Fantin-Latour did not imbue his still-life objects with some sort of symbolism. If it is appropriate to speak of symbolism in Fantin's paintings, it is expressed in sensual pleasure as embodied by familiar objects, such as flowers, wine carafes and fruit. It was at this time, in the mid-1860s, that the artist loved to expose the insides of fruits, tempting the viewer with their lush juiciness.
