Still Life

Germany, 1660

Christopher Paudiss, who received training in the workshop of Rembrandt in the period from 1645 to 1650s, developed his own individual style in the genre of still-life without following blindly the Dutch traditions. He infuses everyday objects with a life of their own, thus transforming the surrounding environment into a living vibrant world. In the Hermitage painting the ordinary everyday objects are shown with such naturalness and ingenuous simplicity as if the artist had simply enclosed a piece of real life within a frame. However, the objects are far from being randomly arranged. The painting is remarkable for the sense of unity and harmony due to the painter’s skill at putting them together.
