Christ on the Day of Judgement with the Virgin and St John the Baptist as Intercessors

Germany, 15th century

During the Middle Ages when justice was perceived as God’s will, paintings on the Last Judgment subject-matter decorated town halls reminding judges of fair and unbiased administration of justice. The inscription on the frame reads: "Whoever is elected to the Council, beware of not losing your selfhood (soul), let everyone be equal before him, both rich and poor, both a stranger and a friend, then will he judge without falling into sin”. The artist represents but the central figures from the upper part of the ‘Last Judgment’ scene (deesis). Before Christ seated on a rainbow are the kneeling Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist. The sword, the symbol of God’s wrath, is directed towards the sinners, while the lily, the symbol of mercy, is pointed at the righteous. Angels hold the instruments of Christ's Passion. The artist seeks to create a sense of volume with the aid of modelling in light and shade, but the most important elements in the painting are line and silhouette. This painting is an example of late Gothic, the so-called soft or sweet style.
