Gauguin, Paul. 1848-1903

Bouquet

France, 1884

The somewhat gloomy mood of Bouquet may be explained by the situation in which Gauguin found himself: in 1884, he and his family moved from Paris to Rouen hoping to find buyers for his paintings there but was soon to meet with disappointment. Gauguin did not strive for botanical accuracy and was entirely unconcerned about correctly depicting each berry. Although the rowan berry is rendered exactly, the colour selected does not match that of the actual berry. It acquires new function here - the red spots glimmer prettily, but ominously. The dark background and the hazy reflections in the mirror bring an element of mystery to the painting. However the rounded, soothing lines of the vase and the oval mirror are designed to subdue the gloomy mood characteristic of that painting.
