Vuillard, Jean Edouard. 1868-1940

Young Woman in a Room

France, Circa 1892/1893

In this painting Vuillard exploits the decorative effect that arises from the juxtaposition of the striped dress and the generalized colour patches of the interior. Inspired by Japanese woodcuts, the artist expresses himself in the language of light, colour and arabesque. One such arabesque is the étagère, indicated only by a few rapid brushstrokes. A decorative artist with an exceptional eye, Vuillard knew from the outset that striped patterns would become expressive in combination with large surfaces of colour, of which there are two here: the greyish door and the floor. And in order to show the floor Vuillard did not even have to resort to brush and paint - he simply left the cardboard (no less than a third of the area of the composition) unpainted. The artist's searchings in the sphere of decorativeness were reflected in this small, beautifully painted work - above all in the fact that the woman's dress interests him more than she does herself. The slight irregularity of the stripes of the dress, their seemingly quivering pattern, creates an impression of the woman's movement: it is as if she has appeared briefly "in shot" in the motionless interior and her dress unexpectedly produces a new decorative combination. The echoes between the bouquet and the dress, separated by the empty grey surface of the door, serve as the colouristic opening of the composition. This painting may depict Misia Natanson (née Godebska, later Sert), the wife of Thadée Natanson, publisher of the Revue Blanche, an influential art and literature periodical in the late 19th century. Misia was a gifted pianist. Ravel dedicated his Waltz to her and Diaghilev valued her advice. She was painted many times by Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vallotton and Bonnard. She was around 20 years old when this work was painted and Vuillard was deeply in love with her.
