Marquet, Albert. 1875-1947

Landscape with a Bridge

France, Circa 1917/1919

In 1914-18 Marquet worked mainly in the south - at Collioure, Marseilles, Nice and L'Estaque. However, the Landscape with a Bridge was undoubtedly painted not in the south, but in the Ile-de-France, because it conveys with exceptional simplicity and expressiveness the characteristic features of the light in that particular region. The motif of the river is also typical of Marquet's paintings in a period when he, according to his wife's recollections, "spent the summer on the banks of the Marne or Seine - renting a house here, staying in a hotel there - just to be near the water". The subject of the painting and specific peculiarities - the treatment of the trees and sky - link it to landscapes executed at Samois (1917) and Herblay (1919).
