Path in a Park with a Figure

France, Between 1910 and 1914

In the miniature painting of A Path in a Park with a Figure rapid brushstrokes are the order of the day and thus the first impression might be of a rapid study made on location. This work, however, was made not outside, but in the studio. The framing edge painted by the artist is additional proof of that fact. The motif of a park landscape with a path and a figure appeared in Derain's work in his Fauvist years. Later, under the influence of Picasso's Cubism, Derain abandoned bright colours, preferring earthy, almost monochrome tones. The paintings made in the years 1911-13 reflect his leaning towards simplification and primitivism. Derain found examples of poetic naiveté in the paintings of "Douanier" Rousseau, whom he was one of the first to appreciate.
