Portrait of a Young Woman with a Child

Flanders,

On this painting the artist has portrayed a young woman wearing formal attire, in a close-fitting, heavy dress with huge, heavily starched collar. She supports her son on her knees with a confident and powerful grip of her arm. The mother?s magnificent dress and the child?s rich costume underscore still more strongly the purity and fragile tenderness of the woman?s face and the openness and naiveness of the boy. The work belongs to Van Dyck?s early period, when he still painted in a style close to old Flemish traditions.
