Icon: St George with Scenes from his Life

Ancient Russia, First half of the 16th century

St George is shown standing full length, wearing rich armour and a medallion on his chest with an image of Christ Emmanuel. Depicted around this central part are 14 scenes from the saint's life, making this a rare example of an icon with the life of St George. A number of stylistic indications - the elegant, fine, elongated figure of St George, the elongated figures in the scenes - allow us to attribute the icon to a Moscow artist of the first half of the 16th century. The borders between the individual scenes are not clearly defined, which creates the impression that they are united into a single composition.
