Icona: Saviour

Russia, Late 16th century

Such images of Jesus Christ, as the Saviour, either bust or shoulder length, were usually reserved for small icons and were widely found throughout the whole of Russia. Those who prayed before these icons saw there the face of God on a scale commensurate with the face of man. The Saviour is the work of a late-16th-century Moscow master, as we can tell from the execution of the face, the arrangement of the locks of hair, and the dark dulled tones.
