Icon: St Nicholas with a Deisis and Selected Saints

Russia, First half of the 16th century

Produced in the Russian North in the first half of the 16th century, this icon has a shoulder length image of St Nicholas against a blue background. His head has a gold halo with brown edging. Around the central part are 14 scenes showing various saints against a golden-yellow ground. At the top is a Deisis composition (with saints interceding on behalf of mankind before Christ the judge on the day of the Last Judgement) consisting of five figures: in the centre is Christ, and to His sides the Virgin, St John the Baptist, the archangels Michael and Gabriel. Then to the right and left, moving down the sides of the icon, come the apostles Peter and Paul, St Athanasius, the Prophet Elijah and then the martyr saints - St Catherine, an unidentified figure, St Nicetas, Archdeacon Stephen and St Parasceva the Good Friday.
