Epiphany is the name used to describe the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan. In a wide river stands the naked Christ; by His legs are an old man and a woman, allegorical figures personifying the river and the sea. St John the Baptist wears his traditional sheepskin and raises his right hand over the head of Christ. The iconography of this painting derives from Byzantine sources.
