Doré, Gustave. 1832-1883

Tavern in Whitechapel

France, 1869

The artist produced this drawing in Paris after his return from London, where he collected material for his book about London, its inhabitants and customs. Accompanied by policemen from the Scotland Yard, Dore went around the city, including the East End inhabited by workers and the Whitechapel, one of the most colourful districts of London, inhabited by beggars and declassed elements, making sketches on the spot.
