M-me Guillemet (the owner of a fashion house in Paris), her husband and her younger sister Margarita were close friends of the artist and repeatedly sat to him. The Hermitage drawing is associated with the Portrait of M-me Jules Guillemet Wearing a Hat (Museum of Arts, Saint Louis, USA) produced in pastel around 1880. Probably the artist strove not only to convey the likeness but also to create a sort of a generalized image of a young Parisian woman.
